Sophia on politics, sports, and life

{December 3, 2008}   Bay Area professional sports

It’s a depressing time.

The Golden State Warriors are a good team, but they’re a mess. They lose to ‘bad’ teams and actually have a fight chance against the ‘better’ teams like the Celtics. What should be “easy wins” end up being loses. Horrible!

The Oakland A’s… it’s just not their time. I’m not too into baseball, but I know the team is still in a reconstruction phase. The SF Giants are a wreck. Baseball in the Bay Area doesn’t look so great.

The Oakland Raiders are well… the Raiders. They looked great against Denver, but then they completely fell apart against the Chiefs? I don’t know about them sometimes. Great players, but the coaching staff… I don’t know. Can we draft a new coach? haha Can we trade owners? If only it were possible.
The SF Niners have made positive improvements. They still have a ways to go, but they’re going in the right direction. Not in playoff contention, maybe next year?

The Sharks are all we have. I’m not into hockey. I don’t know anything about hockey or soccer so I have no clue how good of a team they are or are not, but all I hear is that they’re strong and winning. Good for them.

{November 20, 2008}   Young Warriors 2009!

It was iffy starting the season without Monte, and with all the changes in the roster during the off season. Most people were writing off the Warriors this season. I have to admit, I did too.

But here we are…. 5-6. Not too shabby. All I can say is… MORROW! I know all Warrior fans are saying it too. This guy is really something. UNDRAFTED rookie? He’s showing all star numbers and MVP charisma- backed by solid performances from Biedrins, Jackson, Maguette, and Azuibuikke. Not to mention: Turiaf, Randolph, Wright, Watson, Nelson, Harrington, and others sitting on the bench waiting for some action.

Ellis is scheduled to be returning soon. This team is astonishing. Underdogs once again! A bunch of rookies and other new kids. I am excited watching these young guys! I see a bright future for the Warriors under Don Nelson’s wing!

I am a Raider fan! Have been since I was a kid, and will always be. Helps that I was born during the good years. 1983, when the Raiders last won a SuperBowl.

Though we represent Raider Nation with pride and so much passion, we know deep inside the truth. The Raiders are not the best team in the NFL. It has been a very long time since we’ve had a winning season. Shuffling coaches, inconsistency, players with bad attitudes, bad draft decisions…. we know the root of the Raiders pitfall. 1 person to blame, 1 name we all know and hate. AL DAVIS, President of the General Partner of the Oakland Raiders.

In 2007, Davis sold a minority stake in the Raiders for $150 million and said that he would not retire until he wins two more Super Bowls. Knowing Davis, his past, and his actions in regards to the continuous coach shuffling, unfortunately, the Raiders will be disasterous until Davis is out!

Davis is old and is trying to cut the corners. To get to the Super Bowl in 2002, Davis picked up players who were already successful in the past, such as Jerry Rice, in order to get that success from them. It got them wins and boosted the ego of the team, but after the lose, and the players departed, then what? It’s short lived. That is NOT how you build a winning franchise!

The Raiders needs young players with potential and willingness to learn. We need coaches and a coaching staff that will build and develop these players to fit into a master plan. A long-term plan! Kiffen, Russell, and McFadden are assets that could fit into such a plan, but old impatient Davis killed that plan when he fired Kiffen.

Davis didn’t only fire Kiffen, but he embarassed Kiffen trashing his character. Davis showed the whole world exactly why you do NOT want to work under him. If you don’t follow Davis’ plan and give him the results that he wants, he will do whatever he needs to in order to get rid of you. Contractually, he had to spin the reasoning for firing Kiffen. Was it the truth? I don’t think so. Davis is not a dumb cookie. He knows what he’s doing…. Question is, who will want to work under him know. Cable? Who the hell is this guy? A nobody. He has nothing to lose because he was nothing anyways. That’s exactly what we’ll get out of him too. NOTHING.

I am a Raider fan since birth. It’s not easy knowing how crappy our team is as a result to ownership and management. But what can you do? I’m just waiting it out because Raider Nation is strong. We will rise again one day… once this 80 year old idiot either dies or gives up his position with the Oakland Raiders.
